What You Should Know About Your Crossbite

What You Should Know About Your CrossbiteA crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth bite down on the inside of the lower teeth. It can affect a single tooth or multiple teeth, and it can affect one side of the mouth or both. If you have teeth that lie near the cheek or tongue instead of coming together with your bottom teeth evenly, you are dealing with a crossbite.

Problems Associated with Crossbites

There are a variety of reasons why you should consider correcting a crossbite:

•  It can cause gum disease and bone loss
•  It can result in premature wear and damage to the teeth
•  It can cause improper chewing patterns
•  A crossbite can lead to an unattractive smile
•  Crossbites are often related to TMJ dysfunction

Available Dental Treatment Options

Early crossbite correction is recommended, so in most cases, you'll be looking at treatment options for your children. Crossbite treatment will typically involve an adjustment of a child's teeth with dental appliances in order to get the bite pattern to match uniformly.

This can be done using dental expanders. An expander looks similar to a retainer, but it will have a screw that will be tightened each night so that it spreads out your child's bite. Braces or dental facemasks can also be used.

Dentists tend to differ when discussing when crossbite treatment should be started. Some believe that it should begin as soon as the problem is noticed, while others believe that the child's 6 year molars should be in before treatment is initiated. Despite these differing opinions, all dentists believe that the condition can't be ignored, as a variety of complications can result later in life if the problem isn't dealt with appropriately.

Does your child have a crossbite, or are your teeth shifting out of position? Contact an orthodontist today to talk about what remedies are available.
