|Many of the new patients we see in the office ask us how and what foods they can eat after first getting metal braces. That doesn't mean you have to live on peanut butter and jelly or Jell-O during your entire treatment.
We educate our existing and new patients on what they can and cannot eat with braces daily. If you are considering straightening your teeth, here's a quick cheat sheet to what foods you want to steer clear of when wearing metal braces.
Fruits and Vegetables to Avoid
Each of us needs to consume a certain amount of fruits and vegetables in our diet on a daily basis, in order to remain vital and healthy. Fruit and veggie snacks are the perfect combination of yummy and healthy, but when you are wearing metal braces, how you eat them can be a bit tricky.
Sticking with naturally soft fruits and cooking your vegetables will easily allow you to maintain your current diet by just ingesting it a bit differently. If you love blueberries and raspberries, these are the perfect fruits to bite into softly. Boiling or steaming your veggies will also guarantee they are tender for your mouth.
Meat May Also Need to Change Slightly
Although we need protein to survive and it's essential for anyone in your home still in the growing stages, it also is a bit of a muck-maker for braces wearers because it is rich in fibers which makes it harder to chew and grind up. This can leave meat particles to hang on the brackets and on your molars.
